Nintendo Refuses to Use Generative AI in its games

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in their latest investor call that the company is not planning on using AI or any other form of generative technology for its games.
As reported by TweakTown, Furukawa’s stance is in sharp opposition with every other developer in the business, who are actively pursuing the usage of AI tech or planning to do so openly.

“In the game industry, AI-like technology has long been used to control enemy character movements, so I believe that game development and AI technology have always been closely related. Generative AI, which has been a hot topic recently, can be more creative [in its use], but I also recognize that it has issues with intellectual property rights.”
“Our company has [had] the know-how to create optimal gaming experiences for our customers for decades. While we are flexible in responding to technological developments, we would like to continue to deliver value that is unique to us and cannot be created simply by technology alone.” said Furukawa, in response to the fourth question in the investor call transcript.

The gaming industry is seeing an influx of positivity towards AI generated content despite the ethical issues that arise when diminishing artistic merit. While Nintendo knows that generative AI can have negative implications for IP rights, it is a great show of respect to all artists and developers that work in the field of gaming.
